The Cumberland - $695

The Cumberland comes from the
same small, exclusive shop that makes the
Shenandoah for us.  Skilled luthiers hand
carve these instruments in the time
honored European workshop method.
Specialists carve scrolls, others carve tops
and backs, and so on.  These workers get
very good at what they do.  The varnish is
thin, supple, and completely laid by hand.
The neck is comfortable and fast.  The
response, tone, and dynamic range mark
a highly affordable true intermediate
instrument - an instrument made by
skilled hands with great care, rather than
rushed into being by the modest skills of
factory workers.

We set up The Cumberland by hand in
our shop with properly planed
fingerboard, well fitted soundpost,
excellent simple fittings, good quality
strings, and a well cut French bridge.  We
aim for a low and fast contest fiddle action,
steel strings (generally Helicore), fine
tuners, and a setup that emphasizes crisp
powerful play, with a slightly gritty low end.

We think players seeking a fine
intermediate instrument, good players
seeking a backup, and the budget minded
will enjoy these instruments.  Our usual
terms including a generous trial period
apply.
