Fiddle Optimization

We have a standard pattern for optimizing fiddles.

1.  Basic setup.  Usually we find that incoming instruments lack a few
things in basic setup.  Soundposts, bridges, and fingerboard/neck
shaping typically leave much to be desired.  These basics must be right
prior to proceeding.  We also find a surprising number of loose seams!

2.  Set the main body bending resonance (B0) to the “singing pitch” the
instrument likes by adjustments to fingerboard

3.  Adjust the sides of the fingerboard slightly as required to smooth out
response

4.  If possible, set tailpiece resonance frequency to a certain distance
away from the “singing pitch” - with fine tuners this isn't always as clear
as with none, but we can generally get the tailpiece resonance at a point
where it doesn't sap lots of energy!

5.  Adjust ribs to even response via slight scraping of the interior of the
ribs or blocks in critical areas

6.  Tune bridge to symmetry by very slight scraping along the sides.  We
also may do other minor adjustments.  These are small and distinct from
the normal bridge setup.

7.  Adjust bass bar by fine scraping of dead spots

8.  Balance response of F hole edges on each side

9.  Repeat until stable

How does this process work?  Energy seems to go into production of nice
sound rather than noise.  The amount of wood actually removed is none
to very little.  Just burnishing the bridge with a fingernail can be enough
to clean up the tone a little if done in just the right spot.  Maybe
something to do with constructive and destructive interference.
Regardless, the system consistently smooths and improves response
and tone.

Players report faster and more consistent response, better balance,
better focus, and a sweetness to the tone.  We have had nobody ask for
a refund.

Our normal charge for this process is $200 plus whatever is required to
get the instrument in shape via basic setup.  We reserve the right to
decline working on instruments we don't think will be hurt.

Please allow 1 week in the shop for this process. We like to let
instruments settle between steps.

We offer a 100% refund if you're not satisfied.
