Fiddle Setup

Fiddles and violins generally start out about the same.  Most the
difference lies in setup.  The setup on a fiddle generally aims to:

  • Provide a balanced, even, somewhat metallic tone with lots of
    grit and punch
  • Allow rapid string crosses, especially from doublestop pair to
    doublestop pair
  • Provide a relatively "stiff" feel with minimum action height

We set up our fiddles up to achieve these characteristics by:

  • Planing the fingerboard to have almost no scoop or relief,
keeping the strings very close along the whole range of play
  • Getting the break angle of the strings over the bridge slightly
less than for a classical instrument, where feasible
  • Cutting the bridge with a longer radius arc; several cuts are
available on request from essentially "classical" to very flat for
    droning old-time
  • Shaping the bridge and adjusting the soundpost to favor a
    darker, less-classical tone

We can set your fiddle up to our specifications.  The cost for this
depends on its current condition and exactly what you desire.  We
generally end up charging from $125 to $250, depending on the level
of work required.
